Meet

Captain Steve Branch

Person holding a large silver fish on a boat.

Steve Branch grew up in the Big Thicket of Southeast Texas where his father taught him and his brother to hunt, fish and navigate the woods of the Neches River bottom. In 1992 he moved to Port Lavaca, Texas to own his own pharmacy. It was there Steve discovered all that the bay systems of the middle coast of Texas had to offer. In 1995, Steve laid down his rifle and picked up a fly rod, sight casting for redfish in the waters of Matagorda Island, from Port O’Connor to San Antonio Bay and beyond. He hasn’t looked back and has since fly-fished every bay system in Texas. Steve recently began the transition from pharmacy owner to fulfilling a lifelong dream of guiding on his beloved bay system. Not only does he bring years of fishing experience with him, but also a genuineness for people as well.

What to Expect

Fly Fishing the Texas Coast

The Texas coast between Port O’Connor and Rockport offers excellent opportunities to sight cast for redfish, as well as shots at black drum, speckled trout, and sheepshead.

We will be sight casting primarily for redfish in shallow water. Ice water is provided, but feel free to bring your own food and beverages. Most modern fly tackle gear intended for saltwater will be provided, as will flies proven to be successful in the areas we will be fishing. You are welcome to bring your own.

Man holding a fish on a boat.

As a seasoned fly fisherman, I've had my fair share of guiding experiences, but my recent trip with Steve Branch of On Fly Fly Fishing Adventures in Port O’Connor truly stands out.

Steve is a master of his craft. His deep understanding of the local ecosystem and his ability to locate redfish made for an incredible day on the boat.

What I appreciate most about Steve is his patience and ability to teach. He not only shared invaluable tips and techniques but also fostered an atmosphere of excitement and camaraderie. Watching him work was a lesson in itself—he knows exactly how to read the water and adapt to the conditions, ensuring that we made the most of our time.

I’m already looking forward to bringing my kids out with Steve. Knowing they’ll learn from such a dedicated guide who genuinely loves what he does gives me peace of mind. I can’t wait for them to experience the thrill of fly fishing under his guidance.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable day on the water, I wholeheartedly recommend Steve Branch. He’s not just a guide; he’s someone who will inspire your passion for fly fishing and create memories that last a lifetime.

I grew up fishing the great lakes in the Midwest and it wasn't until my adult years that I began using a fly rod. When I got to Texas I was excited to try my hand at sight fishing for reds but I was  self conscious to go out for fear that I'd look like a fool. All of that went out the window when I chartered with Captain Branch. Not only did he help me get comfortable, he put me on the fish and I landed my first beautiful legal size red on the fly after only a short time. I had an absolute blast and I can't recommend him enough for anglers of any skill level. My only concern is that he'll get too popular to fit me in. Already looking forward to my next flats trip with Capt. Branch!

Steve has a vast knowledge of the Texas middle coast bay systems. He is passionate about all of the outdoors and is an enthusiastic fly fisherman. Steve has a keen ear for listening, is very accommodating and has a knack for telling a great story.

He has a strong work ethic and is very detailed in his approach to all fishing. Steve has a good sense of humor and is always fun to be around. Most of all, he is one of the most genuine guys I have ever met.

I look forward to fishing with Steve again in the near future.

Steve is as good as it gets on the water, always finding fish, patient with my cast and an all-around incredible guy.  A true steward of POC and the surrounding fisheries, you can tell how much he loves being on the water.  The Texas Coast, sight casting to Red’s, and my buddy Steve makes for an incredible day!
