Meet

Captain Steve Branch

IMG_0527

Steve Branch grew up in the Big Thicket of Southeast Texas where his father taught him and his brother to hunt, fish and navigate the woods of the Neches River bottom. In 1992 he moved to Port Lavaca, Texas to own his own pharmacy. It was there Steve discovered all that the bay systems of the middle coast of Texas had to offer. In 1995, Steve laid down his rifle and picked up a fly rod, sight casting for redfish in the waters of Matagorda Island, from Port O’Connor to San Antonio Bay and beyond. He hasn’t looked back and has since fly-fished every bay system in Texas. Steve recently began the transition from pharmacy owner to fulfilling a lifelong dream of guiding on his beloved bay system. Not only does he bring years of fishing experience with him, but also a genuineness for people as well.

I can say in all confidence, that Capt. Steve is an accomplished fly fisherman. He has a passion for the sport and it is contagious when you hang around with him.

Twenty years have passed since I caught my first Redfish on a fly. The man standing beside me had tied that fly the evening before, right before he made us both a PBJ for us to take with us fishing the next morning. Casting to a fish we had “Hunted Up” and watching that fish swim out of a pod and eat that fly is a favorite memory of mine, and that experience started me down a path of wanting to learn more about the sport of sight casting to Redfish with a fly rod. That man was my friend Steve Branch.

Along that path I have met some notable fly fishermen who have shared tidbits of their knowledge with me. One thing of interest I would like to share here is this, those anglers rarely told me anything that I had not already been told by Steve Branch.

I can say in all confidence, that Steve is an accomplished fly fisherman. He has a passion for the sport and it is contagious when you hang around with him. He has a knowledge and understanding of the sport of sight casting to the Redfish that inhabit the waters where he has spent 30 plus years chasing after them. (Just don’t ask him what that Redfish that just refused a perfectly presented fly was thinking.)

If you chose to fish with Steve you will find he truly enjoys sharing his experience with the fisherwomen and fishermen who spend time on the
bow of his skiff and when he tells you something and you take it upon yourself to dig a little deeper into things do not be surprised to find it was something that you have already heard.

I grew up fishing the great lakes in the Midwest and it wasn't until my adult years that I began using a fly rod. When I got to Texas I was excited to try my hand at sight fishing for reds but I was  self conscious to go out for fear that I'd look like a fool. All of that went out the window when I chartered with Captain Branch. Not only did he help me get comfortable, he put me on the fish and I landed my first beautiful legal size red on the fly after only a short time. I had an absolute blast and I can't recommend him enough for anglers of any skill level. My only concern is that he'll get too popular to fit me in. Already looking forward to my next flats trip with Capt. Branch!

Steve has a vast knowledge of the Texas middle coast bay systems. He is passionate about all of the outdoors and is an enthusiastic fly fisherman. Steve has a keen ear for listening, is very accommodating and has a knack for telling a great story.

He has a strong work ethic and is very detailed in his approach to all fishing. Steve has a good sense of humor and is always fun to be around. Most of all, he is one of the most genuine guys I have ever met.

I look forward to fishing with Steve again in the near future.

Steve is as good as it gets on the water, always finding fish, patient with my cast and an all-around incredible guy.  A true steward of POC and the surrounding fisheries, you can tell how much he loves being on the water.  The Texas Coast, sight casting to Red’s, and my buddy Steve makes for an incredible day!
